Miss Willie K. Hocker

Miss Willie Kavanaugh Hocker of Wabbaseka designed the Arkansas state flag. A member of the Pine Bluff Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she submitted her flag design to the Arkansas General Assembly in 1912, and it was officially adopted as the flag of Arkansas on February 18, 1913. An author, poet, and educator, she taught in Jefferson County schools for 34 years and spent most of her adult life as a resident of Wabbaseka. She lived in a home near this spot directly behind the Wabbaseka United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, and she died in Wabbaseka on February 6, 1944.
