Cass County judges suffered imprisonment by the U.S. Federal Courts rather than make a tax levy to pay fraudulent county and township railroad bonds. F.E. Johnston and W.P. Barnes were imprisoned from September 1, 1883 to January 1, 1884, and W.A. Wray, F.M. George, and E.T. Lane from March 21, 1892 to January 1, 1893.
