L. L. “Stub” Stewart State Park near Buxton occupies former timber land in the Northern Oregon Coast Range and links directly to the Banks–Vernonia State Trail, serving both as a destination park and a trailhead. Planned in the late 1990s and opened on July 8, 2007, it was Oregon’s first new full-service state park since 1972. Renamed in 2005 for Loren LaSells “Stub” Stewart, it was also shaped by Judge Hollie Pihl’s efforts to connect the site with the trail. With campgrounds, cabins, horse facilities, disc golf, astronomy viewing, and pioneering mountain bike-only trails added in 2012, it became a major recreation hub.
