The Peace Candle of the World in Scappoose, Oregon, is a roughly 50-foot roadside landmark created in 1971 by factory owner Darrel Brock outside Brock Candles Inc. By covering a silo with 45,000 pounds of red wax, he turned an advertisement into a symbol of world peace. Lit on May 9, 1971, by the town’s mayor and Governor Tom McCall after President Richard Nixon declined, it proved too difficult to keep burning outdoors, so its flame evolved from a wick to natural gas and later neon. The factory burned in 1990, but the candle endured as a notable Oregon roadside attraction.
