Near this site on November 7, 1864, General Sherman received orders from President Lincoln and General Grant to proceed with plans to march his army from Atlanta to the sea, and the March to the Sea originated in Kingston. This action resulted in a new type of warfare known as total war, in which cities, towns, farms, plantations, and civilians were considered targets to end the war.
