From May 19-23, 1864, Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman occupied the Thomas V. B. Hargis house as his headquarters during three days of reorganizing forces in the campaign that ended at Atlanta. Believing that Johnston's army had moved from Adairsville directly on Kingston and the river crossings south, Sherman concentrated his forces here after May 18, only to discover that Johnston had gone directly to Cassville and, without making a stand, retreated to Allatoona on May 20. Sherman responded on May 23 by moving due south.
