David Tod, known as Ohio's Civil War Governor, was born February 21, 1805, and died November 13, 1868. He served in the Ohio State Senate from 1836 to 1840, as U.S. Minister to Brazil from 1847 to 1851, and as Governor of Ohio from 1862 to 1864. David Tod's Brier Hill homestead was bequested to the people of the Mahoning Valley for use as a public cemetery in 1908 by his son George Tod. George Tod, son of David Tod and Maria Smith Tod, was born at Warren, Ohio, October 8, 1840, and died at Brier Hill November 16, 1908. He was 1st Lieut., 2nd Regiment, O.V.I.
