At City Point in Hopewell, Virginia, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant maintained his headquarters for nine and a half months during the final phase of the American Civil War. The port on the James River became a crucial Union base during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865, with supplies moving through the port and onto the City Point Railroad to sustain Union forces in the field. That logistical network supported the campaign against Petersburg, whose capture and railroad connections opened the way to Richmond’s fall and helped bring the war to an end less than a week later. The site also preserves Appomattox Manor and its outbuildings.
