City Point’s location at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers made it an ideal hub for the movement of men and material for the U.S. Army. From City Point, supplies and men traveled by road and rail to and from the Petersburg front. Troops or equipment bound for Bermuda Hundred lines north of the Appomattox or for the works fronting Richmond continued up the James to wharves at Broadway Landing, Bermuda Hundred, or Deep Bottom. After almost ten months of fighting, the battle lines extended more than 37 miles across three distinct fronts, and the vast depot at City Point helped supply them all.
