In 1912 the 62nd United States Congress donated these model 1841 12-Pound Field Howitzers to the Grand Army of the Republic. The guns were cast by N.P. Ames at Springfield, Mass. and displayed in Burson, Calif., by the Grand Army of the Republic until being moved to San Andreas, Calif., and remounted by the Calaveras County Historical Society at the Soldiers Plot in the Peoples Cemetery in the early 1920s. They are now placed here to honor the veterans of Calaveras County as part of an Eagle Scout project by Drake Walker of Boy Scout Troop 352. The east gun was founded in 1841 and weighs 790 lbs., and the west gun was founded in 1844 and weighs 777 lbs.
