The Kōdo temple ruins in Ono, Hyōgo Prefecture preserve a provincial Buddhist temple complex from Japan’s Nara and Heian periods. Built on a river terrace along the Kakogawa River, the enclosed site followed a plan modeled on Yakushi-ji in Nara, with twin pagodas, a Kondō, Lecture Hall, Middle Gate, and cloister. Surviving foundations and excavated artifacts, including roof tiles, earthenware, statue fragments, and metal fittings, show that the temple was founded in the early Nara period, destroyed by fire, revived in the Heian period, and eventually disappeared by that era’s end. The ruins provide a rare view of the planning and changing life of an early provincial temple.
