William F. Packer, a newspaper editor and publisher who served as Governor of the Commonwealth from 1858 to 1861, was born on April 2, 1807, in a house that stood nearby. He died in 1870 in Williamsport and is chiefly remembered for his interest in improved transportation facilities.
