Napoleonville was named for the Emperor of France, Napoleon. It stood on an early travel route used from 1730 to 1770 by the French and later by Acadians going from St. James to the Attakapas Landing on Lake Verret. The lake was named for the Nicholas Verret family of St. James and Assumption Parishes, where father and son served as commandants.
