The Battle of Georgia Landing was the first major battle fought along Bayou Lafourche during the War Between the States. Marching from Donaldsonville, Union forces under General Weitzel, including the 8th NH and 12th and 13th CT, attacked General Mouton’s force of Ralston’s Battery, the 24th and 18th LA, and the Terrebonne Militia. Lacking equipment and reinforcements, General Mouton concentrated his force along Texana Road, the property line between Georgia and Himalaya Plantations, then retreated to Thibodaux and later Brashear City, leaving the region under Union control.
