In Honolulu, the Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives preserves Hawaiʻi’s missionary period from 1820 to 1863 through some of the islands’ earliest surviving mission-era buildings and a large research collection. Founded in 1920, it includes the Oldest Frame House, shipped from Boston in 1821 and later used as housing, a schoolroom, and a dining hall; the coral-block Chamberlain House of 1831, adapted to local conditions; and the later Print House, which interprets early Hawaiian-language printing. Designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark with nearby Kawaiahaʻo Church in 1962, the site also holds thousands of artifacts and documents and has supported access to historical materials after the 2023 Lāhainā fire.
