The "dog trot" cabin consisted of two cabins joined together by a breezeway, where much of the wood for fuel was kept during rainy weather. A home of this type could provide living quarters for two families. It was the home of Davis Westlake and Mary Chambers, who married shortly after the cabin was built in January 1842. Westlake was a master collier at the Maramec Iron Works.
