Young State Park near Boyne City occupies 563 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Charlevoix in northwestern Northern Michigan, with recreation shaped by the larger 17,260-acre inland lake. Established in 1920 as one of 13 parks created soon after the Michigan State Parks Commission formed in 1919, it was named for Adolph and Mary Young of Charlevoix, who donated land for its creation. Civilian Conservation Corps improvements in the 1930s helped develop the park. It now serves year-round recreation with swimming, picnicking, boating, fishing for lake, brown, and rainbow trout, three campgrounds, and about five miles of trails used for hiking and cross-country skiing.
