Boyne Mountain Resort in northern Michigan near Boyne City grew from a postwar ski hill into a major four-season destination. Co-developed by Everett Kircher, Jim Christianson, and John Norton, it was purchased in 1948 and opened for skiing in 1949. Its early history is closely tied to Sun Valley, Idaho, where the founders acquired the first chairlift ever built, dating from 1936, and moved it here, with parts still in use. Boyne Mountain became important in ski-lift innovation, helping introduce the world’s first triple and quad chairlifts and the first six-passenger chairlift in the United States, while later expanding with lodging, golf, water attractions, and SkyBridge Michigan.
