The Met Fifth Avenue, the main home of the Metropolitan Museum of Art along Central Park, has evolved from its 1880 red-brick High Victorian Gothic building into a vast complex of more than 20 connected structures. After criticism of the original design, major Beaux-Arts rebuilding by Richard Morris Hunt and Richard Howland Hunt gave the museum its grand Fifth Avenue façade, Great Hall, and Grand Stairway, later completed by McKim, Mead and White. Expanded further by Kevin Roche and Roche-Dinkeloo, it now holds some of the museum’s best-known spaces, preserves architectural fragments, and has been recognized as a city and national landmark while continuing to grow.
