The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is the largest art museum in the Americas by floor area and one of the world’s largest museum buildings. Founded in 1870 to create a national institution for public education and inspiration, it opened its Fifth Avenue building in 1880 and has grown into an encyclopedic museum with about 1.5 million works in 17 curatorial departments. Its collections span ancient to contemporary art across many world traditions, with notable strengths in Egyptian art, period interiors, and the Temple of Dendur. Through scholarship, excavation, conservation, and publishing, it plays a major cultural role in New York and beyond.
