While barnstorming southern Minnesota in August 1923, Charles A. Lindbergh landed his fragile, two-winged, fabric JN-4D "Jenny" in a wheat field just northwest of this site and took adventurous customers up for five dollars a ride. He stayed in the village for four days at the City Hotel and became acquainted with young Glenn Allyn, who was also something of a flier and had a garage near the field where the two often worked on the aircraft. Allyn, a family man, urged the single Lindbergh to enroll as an Air Cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Brooks Field, Texas, which he did. Afterward, his rise as a U.S. Mail pilot was meteoric and culminated in his electrifying solo, nonstop flight across the Atlantic to Paris in 1927.
