On a sandstone bluff above the Colorado River near La Grange, Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery unite two strands of Texas history: a memorial to Texans killed in the Dawson Massacre and Black Bean Episode, and the ruins of Heinrich Ludwig Kreische’s brewery and homestead. The hill became a burial site in 1848, when recovered remains were reinterred in a common tomb that drew more than 1,000 people. Kreische, a German immigrant stonemason, later built his home and a brewery there that grew into one of Texas’s largest before closing after his death. Restored and opened to the public, the site preserves both Republic-era memory and German-Texan enterprise.
