Eighteen men survived the Dawson Massacre, which occurred near Salado Creek within present San Antonio. Three escaped from the battle: Thomas D. James, Henry Gonzalvo Woods, and Alsey S. Miller. Of the fifteen who were captured, John McCrady and W.D. Patterson drowned in a river while attempting to escape from Presidio del Rio Grande near present Piedras Negras about February 1, 1843; John Higgerson was killed attempting to escape from Hacienda Salado near Saltillo on February 11, 1843; William Coltrin, William James Trimble, and Norman B. Woods died in Perote Prison near Vera Cruz; Richard A. Barkley and David Smith Kornegay escaped from Perote Prison on July 2, 1843, and returned to Texas; John Bradley was released from Perote Prison on September 22, 1843; and Nathaniel W. Faison, Milvern Harrell, Edward T. Manton, Allen H. Morrell, Joseph Robinson, and Joseph Shaw were released from Perote Prison on March 24, 1844.
