A series of horizontal lines or terraces on the distant mountain slopes are beach lines left by waves of ancient Lake Lahontan. More than 12,000 years ago, the lake reached a maximum depth of 700 feet, and this spot lay more than 400 feet under water. When early man lived here, the lake stood at a much lower level, and most of Grimes Point was above water.
