Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental Area is a protected Florida landscape of 63,257 acres north of Eastpoint and Apalachicola, encompassing pine uplands, floodplain swamp, savanna, and estuary habitat along the lower Apalachicola River system. It is significant for its rich biodiversity, including imperiled species such as red-cockaded woodpeckers, Bachman’s sparrow, Apalachicola alligator snapping turtles, and Florida black bears, as well as many migratory birds. The area is also known for abundant wildflowers, including pitcher plants, butterworts, and orchids. Recreation includes more than 100 miles of paddling trails, a wildflower driving tour, and designated areas for fishing, hunting, and primitive camping.
