Boise Art Museum, in Julia Davis Park, is a leading fine arts center in the Treasure Valley and Idaho’s only AAM-accredited museum devoted to collecting fine art. Emerging from the Boise Art Association, founded in 1931, it began collecting in 1934 and opened as the Boise Gallery of Art in 1937 through a partnership with the City of Boise and the Federal Works Progress Administration. Renovations and expansions in 1972, 1988, and 1997–98 transformed the institution and enlarged its facilities. Its growing collection emphasizes contemporary realism, modern and contemporary ceramics, and the largest public holding of works by Idaho artist and bookmaker James Charles Castle.
