Cabeza de Vaca traveled the "River of Nuts," the Guadalupe, and became the first European to record the existence of pecans. He noted that they were good food and recognized alternate bearing. Held captive for 9 years on the "River of Nuts," he had ample opportunity to observe the growth and fruiting habits of pecans, making this the first recorded contribution to pecan literature.
