Emory University’s art museum in Atlanta grew from a general museum founded at Emory College in 1876, making it one of Georgia’s oldest museums. After Emory moved to Atlanta, the university museum was formally founded in 1919, gained a permanent home in 1985 through major support from Michael C. Carlos, and expanded in 1993. Known for the Southeast’s largest ancient art collections, it holds more than 25,000 works, serves teaching and research, and reaches schools across Georgia. It also became notable for identifying and returning Ramesses I in 2003, while more recent scrutiny over provenance led to restitutions to Italy, Iraq, and Greece in 2023 and 2024.
