The Horseshoe Hills are a crescent-shaped range north of Manhattan in Gallatin County, Montana, rising to about 6,673 feet between the Big Belt Mountains and the Bridger Range, with Sixteen Mile Creek along their northern edge. Though not especially high, they are notable for an unusually dry environment created by the rain shadow of the Boulder, Elkhorn, and Bull Mountains. Receiving only about 10 to 12 inches of precipitation annually, especially on their southern and southeastern flanks, the hills support a distinctive arid ecology that includes Missouri foxtail cacti, plains prickly pear cacti, yucca, and prairie rattlesnakes. The area includes mostly private land, with some state, Bureau of Land Management, and National Forest holdings.
