General Order No. 6 of the Department of the Army of Ohio ordered General George H. Thomas to establish his headquarters at Lebanon, Kentucky by November 1861, placing them on the second floor of the M.S. Chuck Building on Main Street, a building erected by Dr. Shuck in 1859. At the time, Thomas was at Crab Orchard, Kentucky, having moved there from Camp Dick Robinson after the battle of Wild Cat in October 1861. At Lebanon's Camp Crittenden, he saw the formation of the 10th Kentucky Infantry, and on Jan. 19th, 1862, he and that unit fought the Confederate army under General Felix Zollicoffer at the Battle of Mill Springs or Logan's Crossroads, where Thomas routed Zollicoffer, who became the battle's central figure after mistakenly riding into Union lines and being killed. Though regarded as one of the Union Army's most capable generals, Thomas did not receive the credit he deserved, in part because he served in the Western Theater and in part because some doubted his loyalty for much of the war, since as a native of South Hampton, Virginia, like Robert E. Lee, he had chosen between conflicting loyalties and remained with the Union, a decision that cost him his family's support and brought long animosity from his native state. In September 1863, he earned the nickname "Rock of Chickamauga" when his stand with his men along Chickamauga Creek, about 12 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, helped prevent the destruction of the Army of the Cumberland during a severe Union defeat. Thomas died at age 54 of a massive stroke brought on by an anonymous letter printed in the New York Times on March 12th, 1870 criticizing him over the battle of Nashville, and when he was buried, thousands attended, including President Grant, Generals Sherman, Sheridan, and Meade, cabinet members, a joint committee from Congress, and many soldiers and veterans, while General Schofield and Thomas's family were absent. His sisters told neighbors, "Our brother George died to us in 1861," and in Washington a bronze monument honors him at Thomas Circle, while Lebanon remembers its brief time as his home.
