Dr. James A. Franklin served the medical needs of Mobile for fifty-three years from his residence and never turned an indigent patient away. He was the only African-American to graduate from the University of Michigan in 1911. During the Jim Crow era, he opened his home to Black celebrities and hosted notables such as Marion Anderson, Paul Roberson, and Jackie Robinson.
