Richard Glenn "Dick" Rutan, born July 1, 1938, and dying May 3, 2024, lived a life marked by courage, innovation, and a passion for flight. He served in the U.S. Air Force and flew 325 missions in Vietnam, including 105 as a member of the high-risk Commando Sabre Forward Air Control operation known as the MISTYs. Before retiring from the Air Force in 1978, he received the Silver Star, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, 16 Air Medals, and a Purple Heart. He later became best known for Voyager’s non-stop, unrefueled around-the-world flight in 1986, commanding the milestone journey of 9 days, 3 minutes, and 44 seconds. He also received the Ivan C. Kincheloe Award and the Collier Trophy, and Voyager is on permanent display in the Smithsonian National Air Space Museum.
