The Badin-Roque House is the only surviving example in Louisiana of poteaux-en-terre, or post-in-the-ground, and bousillage architecture, featuring a single central chimney and dirt floors. It is also the only one of five poteaux-en-terre and bousillage homes in the country, offering a firsthand glance at Creole frontier life. Originally a two-room structure with front and back galleries, it was later altered when its owners partially enclosed the back porch with two cabinets, or small rooms, and a breezeway. Carpenters built the house with hand-hewn cypress posts, sand, clay, and Spanish moss, and used bousillage, a mixture of mud and dried Spanish moss, as wall insulation. In the early 1980s, the St. Augustine Historical Society restored the structure and secured its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
