Humans have many effects on the environment, some of them detrimental. The grass in this area is smooth brome, which was introduced from Europe in the early days of settlement. It has spread and replaced native species of herbs and grasses. A solid stand of brome is not nearly as useful for grazing or wildlife as a mixed stand of native grasses.
