Dedicated by the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy and by re-enactors who strive to preserve its spirit, this commemoration marked the one hundredth anniversary of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. It was erected by the Gen. Robert A. Toombs Camp 932, SCV, and Chapter 1329, UDC, under the motto Deo Vindice. It also presents “The Southern Dead,” a poem by Sgt. Benj. R. Gormley honoring Confederate dead as sleeping in Southern glens, recalling the blood-stained cross of St. Andrew borne high on every field and over every ocean, asserting that their cause failed not through their own failing, and urging that their story, battles lost and won, and memory be taught to children and preserved as long as Southern rivers run.
