Mount Muir is a 14,018-foot peak in California’s Sierra Nevada, just south of Mount Whitney and named for naturalist and conservationist John Muir. Beside the heavily traveled John Muir Trail, it is close to Whitney yet recognized as an independent summit because its 318-foot prominence exceeds a common 300-foot standard, earning places on major climbing lists. From near the trail junction in Sequoia National Park, its west side offers a short but steep class 3 scramble or easy rock climb, while its east face drops in a near-vertical 1,400-foot wall. In 1935, climbers completed early class 4 ascents on the east buttress.
