Thor Peak
Nature
Thor Peak is a 12,306-foot summit in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada, near Mount Whitney and above the Mount Whitney Trail. Its significance lies in its dramatic topographic relief, rising 3,937 feet above Whitney Portal in just 1.5 miles and forming a striking profile over the canyon. Runoff drains east through Lone Pine Creek toward Owens Valley, while Pacific weather crossing the Sierra crest gives the peak a severe alpine climate. Thor Peak also holds a place in Sierra climbing history, with a first recorded ascent credited to Norman Clyde and later established routes ranging from easier approaches to technical climbs such as the Southeast Chimney, South Face, and the modern Odin’s Wrath.
