John and Jane Black Thomas emigrated to S.C. around 1755 from Chester Co., PA. John served as a local magistrate and militia captain, and at the beginning of the Revolutionary War he was elected colonel of the Spartan Regiment. Captured in 1779, he was held at Ninety Six and Charleston until the end of the war. After returning to the upstate, he farmed here until his death on October 2, 1811. Jane Black Thomas was also a staunch Whig. After learning of British plans to attack patriots at Cedar Spring, she hurried this intelligence to American forces, helping the patriots prepare an ambush. She also boldly defended a cache of weapons stored on their property. John and Jane Thomas are buried here within sight of their home, which was later owned by S.C. Chief Justice John Belton O’Neall.
