Paris Mountain State Park, about five miles north of Greenville, South Carolina, combines forested slopes, lakes, campgrounds, and trails on and around a distinctive Piedmont monadnock. Cherokee people lived there before European settlement, and the mountain’s name evolved from settler Richard Pearis, who arrived in 1765 and acquired land from the Cherokee. The mountain later served Greenville as part of its water supply and was also the site of the Altamont Hotel and later a Bible institute. Created in the 1930s after a 1935 land transfer, the park was shaped by Civilian Conservation Corps work and remains a major outdoor recreation area with historic CCC features and diverse plant and animal life.
