On November 6, 1869, on this site once known as College Field, Rutgers College hosted the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, in the first intercollegiate football game. The Rutgers team, then known as The Queensmen, defeated Princeton 6-4, catalyzing the development of modern American football. The College Avenue Gymnasium, often referred to as “The Barn”, was built in 1931.
