John Mitchell was a pioneer resident of Spring Valley who achieved national prominence in the settlement of the Pennsylvania anthracite miners strike in 1902 with the co-operation of President Theodore Roosevelt. He served as president of the United Mine Workers from 1889 to 1908, wrote two widely read books on union recognition, and was often acclaimed as an enlightened and fair minded labor leader.
