William Mears Dawes Gristmill was built in 1840 on Raccoon Creek one mile west. This grindstone came from the farm of the mill. Ephraim Cutler quarried the stone on the Ohio River, and Henry Dawes, grandfather of Beman Gates Dawes, founder of The Dawes Arboretum, brought it here by steamboat and cart.
