Built in 1833 by the Granville Congregational Church for its Female Academy and a church meeting room, this building housed the school until 1837, when it moved aside for the Granville Male Academy. The Welsh Congregational Church bought the structure in 1863, combined its two stories into a single room with full-height windows, and held Welsh language services there for sixty years. Granville Grange #2230 met in the building from 1923 to 1973, after which it became the property of the Granville Historical Society and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. During the 1830s and 1840s, opponents of slavery gathered here; in 1834 Theodore Weld proclaimed his radical abolitionist views as a mob outside hurled eggs through the windows, and in 1841 Judge Samuel Bancroft ruled unconstitutional Ohio's extradition law in a dramatic case over whether a runaway slave could be sent back south, after which the crowd rushed the man to a waiting horse and he fled north.
