Built for George C. Boldt, owner of the Waldorf-Astoria and Bellevue-Stratford Hotels, Boldt Castle was begun in 1900, but after Mrs. Boldt's untimely death in 1904, Boldt, bereaved, ordered all work to stop. The unfinished structure was left exposed to the elements until 1978, when the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took ownership and began a program of stabilization and future restoration. Boldt Castle reflects a long-past era, and net revenues from its operation are used by the Bridge Authority to preserve it and other structures for the enjoyment of future generations.
