At San Marcos de Apalache, the original Spanish fortifications began with a flimsy wooden fort started in 1678 and completed in 1679. A second fort, also of wood, was built on this site in 1718. In 1758, a hurricane flooded this fort and forty men drowned. The effects of the hurricane required a new start on construction of the stone fort.
