In 1837 the Tallahassee-St. Marks Railroad opened for regular business operations. In 1983 the railroad closed after 146 years of operation. The following year, the Florida Department of Transportation purchased 16 miles of the corridor, and Florida's first Rails to Trails project began, with funding provided in part from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.
