Hollyhock Hollow Sanctuary is a nature preserve and historic homestead. The homestead, built by an unrecorded Dutch farmer in 1746 and destroyed by fire in 1989, was the first settlement in the area. Hollyhock Hollow was deeded to the Audubon Society of New York State, Inc., as a bird and wildlife sanctuary and personnel headquarters by Robert and Leona Train Rienow, under whose auspices The Nature Conservancy Chapter system was founded on this estate in August, 1953. It is administered and protected in its natural state according to the rules and by-laws of The Audubon Society of New York State, Inc.
