Near Titusville on Florida’s central east coast, Windover is a Middle Archaic burial pond where 168 people were interred in peat over roughly a thousand years about 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. Rising water and thick peat preserved the dead with exceptional completeness, including articulated skeletons, brain tissue, textiles, and grave goods. Excavation began after its 1982 discovery during road construction, and in 1984 archaeologists excavated only half the pond for future research. The remains and artifacts revealed health, diet, burial practices, weaving, and early bottle-gourd storage, making Windover one of the richest Archaic sites known and crucial to understanding Florida’s early peoples.
