Here, Mary Towles Sasseen Wilson first observed Mothers Day in 1887, beginning with her pupils. In 1893, she obtained national observance. The Kentucky legislature recognized her as the “originator of idea.” Congress adopted the second Sunday of May as a holiday in 1914.
