John James Audubon, 1785-1851, was one of America's most famous ornithologists. From 1810-19 he lived in Henderson, roaming the woods in this area and finding and painting birds in their natural habitat. While here, two of his children, John Woodhouse and Lucy, were born. Lucy is buried in Samuel Hopkins cemetery. Audubon State Park is named in his honor.
